Soaring Up From Holiday Doldrums

With the holiday season approaching, many of us can feel lonely and empty at the very time we want most to feel happy and festive. How can we pull ourselves up when we’re “down in the dumps” over the holidays?

Make An Exciting Plan For Yourself

Don’t depend on your family or friends to come up with something exciting for you to do – ask yourself what would be meaningful and fun for YOU. Search for a listing of holiday events in your surrounding area (or beyond if you’re willing to travel).

If you look around, you’ll find some amazingly entertaining events to choose from. If nothing looks interesting, use your imagination to “put together your own package.” Then invite a special person(s) to join you. Or you can go alone and meet new people.

Last year, my husband and I were looking for something new and exciting to do. Our tradition is to go dancing for New Years, but we couldn’t find a dance we wanted to attend. We had several invitations to parties but we didn’t want to stand around eating and talking. We wanted to do something different, and we wanted to be active.

Then we remembered that The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad had a New Year’s train, with a reception and tour of the railroad museum, followed by dinner and dancing during a three-hour ride on the train. We made a plan! We reserved a quaint place to stay the night and made it an all day and overnight affair. It was wonderful!

How Can You Have A Joyful Holiday?

Take charge of your enjoyment by having a little talk with yourself. Tell yourself it’s time for you to grow up and become a full-fledged adult. Recognize that you are no longer a child waiting for others to make plans for you – and when it comes to planning your own life, you need to put yourself in the driver’s seat!

You can begin to achieve the kind of holiday you want by taking the following steps:

1. Break free from traditions that are no longer meaningful to you.

2. Keep the traditions that are meaningful to you – or create new traditions.

3. Stop doing things just because that’s “what’s expected” of you.

4. Be true to yourself when it comes to what you like to do most and which person or people you enjoy being with most.

What if there is no “special person” in your life right now? Then YOU be that special person to yourself! How? By applying the “reverse” Golden Rule to yourself: start doing for yourself what you would like others to do for you!

• If nobody treats you to dinner, flowers, a movie, or a fur coat – treat yourself!

• If nobody listens to your thoughts, your emotions, and your aspirations – listen to yourself!

• If nobody helps you find your way out the doldrums, self-doubt or a difficulty – think for yourself!

You will discover that these are things that are healthy for you to do for yourself as a matter of course. You will also discover that it’s not healthy to depend on other people for these things.

When you stop smothering yourself with excessive dependency on others, you will make a new best friend: yourself! You will come to know yourself, respect yourself, and develop your own tastes and preferences. By taking charge of yourself and the way YOU want to celebrate during the holidays, you will be a lot more fun to be with – for yourself as well as others!
